The USPS® is Serious About Address Validation

The USPS® is implementing new Delivery Point standards that will require all packages to include a complete, electronically validated address in order to ensure the accuracy of delivery addresses. Any package that isn’t DPV verified will be stuck with a $0.20 fine. These new requirements go into effect in July 2016.

What is DPV?

The USPS DPV system scans each address before delivery to determine if that address is a viable delivery destination. The system checks the address against every known house, apartment, Post Office box, rural box, mail drop, and commercial address ensuring that the address has been filled out correctly. This preemptively eliminates delays and postal mix-ups.

Why the sudden crackdown?

According to Parcel Industry, only about 87% of the packages shipped in the United States each year are compliant with Delivery Point Validation standards. Since 13% of packages are currently out of DPV compliance, the USPS will begin assessing fines for every package shipped without a valid address. Consequently, fines could add up quickly for shippers who send large volumes of packages.

How can shippers comply?

Shippers have several options:

The USPS recommends that you use a data quality solution, like Satori Infuse Desktop, to run addresses against the USPS system. Satori Infuse Desktop is USPS CASS Certified™ to correct, complete and verify the deliverability of U.S. postal addresses.

Shipping software solutions, such as Enhanced Mailing and Shipping (EMS), provide in-house address correction, package tracking, cost management and delivery options.
Find a qualified domestic shipping partner that also partners with the USPS. They can ensure that your addresses are compliant.

Which products are affected?

  • 1st Class Package Service
